i have to keep my eyes on the road when i am driving . the rare times i am able to note land marks are when i am a passenger. however that would not help me as i have cognitive problems…. i have a sat nav tom tom which is very basic no nonsense .......i call him tommy do not have it stuck on the screen as they say you should, but on the seat beside me or under dashboard as i do not look at it .it is so easy to use if i am going on an unfamiliar route. i connect to my computer to update downloads ... put in post code i am going to and ‘bobs my uncle’ lovely male voice keeps me right , and even tells me to turn at next safest place because i have taken the wrong turn.so….cool!

allow extra time to get where you are going.I make my own map on a very large piece of paper, carry the original and stop in a safe place to have a look if I feel uncertain. My map is the direct route I am taking, and yes I also remember buildings, cinemas, churches as route markers.Sat nav just so confuses me ,I do fine in my odd way ,it drives my husband nuts,he loves the sat nav.

I find it helps me to remember or focus on a few landmarks.  This doesn’t have to be statues, or public art but could be a familiar building or something that is memorable to you.  I choose things that are not likely to be changed or demolished (I know that sounds stupid, but it does happen) and even if the surroundings change - are improved, renovated bits added or removed etc then your personal landmarks will serve as a reminder that you are on the right path.  Hope that makes sense.  It works for me, and often when I have felt panic fast approaching when I think I’ve gone the wrong way I see the familiar and reassuring landmark and know I’m on the right route.
